  • Participate in MENTORING: BEYOND IDP
    Orlando Young Architects Forum

This program aims to revisit the traditional mentor/apprentice role in architectural education by providing emerging architects with access to experienced and inspiring architects.

The Young Architects Forum and AIA Orlando are currently looking for experienced architects to serve as Mentors and interested interns and emerging architects to participate as Mentees. If you are interested in being a part of the MENTORING: BEYOND IDP program please email Rebecca Talbert  r.talbert@cthsu.com by Monday February 27th.

    MENTORING:  BEYOND IDP

    PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Mentoring: Beyond IDP is a program designed to foster the development of emerging architects by providing them with access to experienced and inspiring architects in an informal group setting.

The departure from traditional mentor/apprentice roles in architecture has created a serious void in the education of young architects in a profession that so heavily relies on a continuum of education following graduation from architecture school.  Historically, young architects worked along side a master architect and learned by listening, observing and participating.

The return of the historical model will allow young architects to receive mentorship from experienced architects and foster personal and professional relationships in an educational setting.  The dialogue that ensues will insure that the link between architecture's experienced past does not suffer a disconnect from architecture's future.

In this program, young architects register with the Young Architects Forum and rank their choice for Mentor after the kick-off event.  Based on the selections, mentors will be assigned and each group can begin to meet. There should be a minimum of at least four meetings during the 8-month period.  Discussion topics during these meetings are determined by both mentors and mentees.

    ELIGIBILITY:

The program is open to young professionals including artists, architects, landscape architects, graphic designers and urban planners who have completed their education at the undergraduate or graduate level within the past ten years.  Applicants are not required to be members of the AIA, however membership at the Associate level is preferred.

    SCHEDULE:

The program will begin with a Kick-off event in March for all Mentors and Mentees. The small groups will meet March through Early November. The program concludes with a Wrap-up event in Mid- November for all participants.
