Reclaiming the Commercial Strip

Join nationally acclaimed planner Randall Arendt for his new seminar “Reclaiming the Commercial Strip”. The seminar addresses the aging building stock along commercial corridors and how to effectively take advantage of redevelopment opportunities. With Central Florida’s SunRail being “on track” with anticipated passenger service in 2011, presentations and a panel of local experts will convene immediately following Randall Arendt's presentation to discuss the ongoing efforts to develop thriving commuter rail stations and associated redevelopment.

UF Center for Latin American Studies Conference

The 58th Annual Conference of the University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies will be on “The Urban Divide in Latin America: Challenges and Strategies for Social Inclusion.” The conference will take place January 28-30, 2009 at the J. Wayne Reitz Union on the UF campus. The conference is co-sponsored by the UF College of Design, Construction and Planning.

This multidisciplinary conference aims to gather scholars and professionals dedicated to improving the quality of life in urban Latin America This forum will provide participants an opportunity to share their research and experiences, and to engage in dialogue to generate ideas and identify solutions to advance social inclusion in Latin American cities. Approximately 150 individuals from Latin America and the US are expected to attend.

Conference presentations will cover such topics as spatial and social equity, governance and political representation, gender, poverty, urban design, public space, housing and informal settlements, land use policy and legislation, urban crime and violence, sustainability and the environment, among others. More than 30 cities in ten Latin American countries will be discussed.

The conference will include three keynote lectures by Jaime Lerner, former Mayor of Curitiba, Brazil; Saskia Sassen, the Lynd Professor of Sociology at Columbia University; and Alan Gilbert, Professor of Geography at University College London.

It’s important to the AIA Orlando Board of Directors and Design Awards Committee to recognize outstanding contributions in the design community. Please review the following Chapter Recognition Awards and nominate an individual or company in the industry.

Nominations can be submitted:

  • electronically in a PDF format and emailed to Karen@aiaorlando.com or
  • Delivered to the AIA Orlando office in an 8.5x11 black binder on Monday, February 9th.

Winners will be recognized at the 2009 Design Awards Gala on Saturday, March 14th. If you have any questions please give me a call.

Nils M. Schweizer Award

This prestigious award is given to recognize an AIA architect whose leadership in community activities and service has been a direct benefit to the profession or community. (Nils M. Schweizer Entry Form)

Award of Merit

This award was developed to give recognition to an individual citizen, public official, or member of an allied profession, who is not an architect, who has advanced the cause of good design and planning and/or has enhanced the public awareness of the value of architects and architecture to society.

This award recognizes outstanding achievement in design, community services, education, and service to the profession and the AIA by an architectural firm. Projects, accomplishments and service submitted must reflect a period of at least 10 years.

This award is given to a company or firm in the State of Florida who has exemplified a sincere and genuine interest in encouraging and affecting outstanding craftsmanship and workmanship. The award is given to a company or firm in Central Florida who has exemplified a sincere and genuine interest in encouraging and affecting outstanding craftsmanship and workmanship on local projects, and has made a significant impact to Central Florida by its active involvement and leadership within the community.

Consultant of the Year Award

This award is given to recognize an individual or company in the state of Florida who, in acting as Consultant to an AIA member, demonstrates consistent dedication to superior standards of design, across a range of projects, and under varying conditions based on exceptional performance in the critical Customer Service areas of Client Focus, Teamwork, Communication, Project Management, Critical Thinking, and Specialist Knowledge.

Fred H. Pryor Young Architect Achievement Award

AIA Orlando and The Young Architects Forum (YAF) have initiated an award to honor and recognize a young architect who consistently demonstrates excellence and exceptional promise. Some criteria include a maximum of ten years out of school (with either a bachelor or masters degree), strong leadership qualities, and community involvement. (Fred H.
