| AIA Orlando Education Task Force Update |
Proposed Central Florida School of Architecture
Earlier this year, the AIA Orlando Board of Directors established an Educational Task Force to explore the possibility of creating a new School of Architecture (SoA) in the Central Florida area. The Educational Task Force (ETF) met to outline the desires of the professional community. Several members volunteered for this effort. The ETF developed a “White Paper” as well as a survey of firms in the area. The White Paper outlined the desires of what the profession would like to see in a School of Architecture. This document was then presented to the local Institutions in the area. The initial goal of AIA Orlando was to start the process that would have (at a minimum), a fully accredited School of Architecture offering at least a Bachelor of Architecture Degree, in the Central Florida community within the next five years.
Chapter leadership has been working with Valencia Community College during the past few years to develop an articulation agreement with the University of Florida School of Architecture where second year students compete for admittance into the University’s Upper Division Design level. The success of that arrangement has grown to now include Florida A&M University. We believe this to be the first step in the process to have agreements with all schools within the state and potentially the entire Southeast United States, which will provide opportunities for students to continue their architectural education. The VCC Associate of Arts in Architecture program has become recognized as a viable path for the education of future architects. The challenge for the profession is that the talented students leave the area and most do not return after graduation.
In September of 2008, a group of Institutional leaders from Valencia Community College, the University of Central Florida and the University of Florida - College of Building, Design and Construction met on the campus of VCC at the request of VCC’s President, Dr. Sandy Shugart, PhD, to see if there was interest in the creation of a Central Florida School of Architecture. The dialogue was open and positive with several options available for further research and exploration as what will be the final configuration of the program.
The options included: 1) continuing the existing 2 year Associate of Arts in Architecture (currently at VCC) and then have the students transfer to another school, 2) adding the next two years leading to a Bachelors of Design (non-professional degree) offered either at VCC or UCF, and 3) develop a program for the final two years leading to a Masters of Architecture (working with U of F or another accredited SoA). The essence of the program would be to have a 2+2+2 here in the Central Florida area. The program could also have a 2+2+1 or 2+3 leading to a Bachelor of Architecture Degree (professional degree) depending on how the final program is finalized.
In December a follow up meeting was held with VCC, UCF, Seminole Community College (SCC) and Lake Sumter Community College (LSCC) to discuss the development of a Center for the Built Environment (CBE). This Center would include degrees in Architecture, Interior Design, Construction Management and future degrees in Landscape Architecture. Our interest is in the development of the architectural component of the CBE. The current plan is have the School of Architecture located on the West Campus of VCC. With the completion of the new Joint-Use Facility (Building 11) and the relocation of the engineering related space into Building 11 it will free-up space in the existing Building 8 for the new third and fourth year design studios as well as other programmatic spatial requirements. This program would begin with the Fall Semester of 2010. The Chapter has been invited to participate in the development of this program to assure that the final product is something the profession can embrace and support as we all move forward.
Once the third and fourth years are in place, the next step will be the integration of the Masters Degree into the equation. Currently it is believed that the University of Florida offers several benefits in the development of this new program. The current articulation agreement with U of F provides the synergy to foster this new working relationship with not only VCC but also UCF. The University of Florida‘s, City-Lab program is currently working on establishing a new location at UCF’s downtown campus near the Amway Arena. Discussions are on going with how the relationship between all parties will be finally configured with the ultimate goal of an accredited Master’s Degree here in Orlando.
The CBE’s School of Architecture is also looking at the education of an architect as a 2+2+2+2 process when you consider the internship period utilizing the Intern-Architect Development Program as mandated by the Florida Board of Architecture and Interior Design and administrated through the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. It is our hope that by engaging the profession with the SoA the AIA Chapter will provide Co-Op opportunities for the students during their educational process. We believe this is an added benefit to the student and the profession. Another benefit to this program is that the profession is already providing a number of adjunct faculty members to the VCC program and we see this opportunity expanding as program needs increase.
AIA Orlando is excited about the recent events and pleased with the rapid developments at VCC and UCF over the past few months. We are looking forward with optimism as we can see the new Orlando School of Architecture on the horizon. We want to thank Dr. Shugart for vision and leadership in making this a reality. We also want express our appreciation to Dr. David Harrison, Vice Provost for Regional Campuses at UCF, for his dedication to this cause, and the other members of the Institutional staff for their support and assistance.
Respectfully submitted,
John P. Ehrig, FAIA
Chairman

| In Memoriam (Bill Yeaple, AIA) |
It is with our deepest sympathies that we announce the passing of Bill Yeaple, AIA. Bill founded the AIA Orlando Healthcare Committee and served as its chair for several years before moving to Colorado.
Bill earned a Bachelor's of Architecture from the University of Arizona in 1981, a Master's of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley in 1986, and a Ph.D in Environmental Psychology from City University of New York in 1998. He moved from Ft. Collins, CO to Brooklyn Park, MN in July of this year to join the architecture firm Ellerbe Becket. He was part of a team that recently completed a project for the Mayo Clinic. A member of the American Institute of Architects, his most rewarding professional achievement was his pro bono work with Hospitals of Hope on the design and construction of medical clinics in impoverished areas of Bolivia and Honduras. Bill loved dancing, the outdoors, hiking, snowboarding, kayaking, cross-country skiing, and skating, and was always up for any kind of pick-up game with his nieces and nephews. In addition to physical activity, he enjoyed the arts. He was as content at a museum or the ballet as he was at a ball game.
He is survived by his father William Yeaple of Modena, NY, his mother Mary Joan Yeaple of Ft. Collins CO, his brother Mike Yeaple of Key Largo, FL, and his sisters Linda Yeaple, Christine Yeaple, and Lisa Lawson of Ft. Collins, Leslie Yeaple of Gardiner, NY, and Anne Griffith of Corvallis, OR. Bill took great joy in being with his nieces and nephews and they adored him. They are Amity Dippel and her children Tanner and Hailey of Gardiner, NY, Jacquelyn Yeaple of Atlanta, GA, Adam Yeaple, U.S. Marine Corps, Virginia Beach, VA, Marlee and Jacob Griffith of Corvallis, OR, Brent Mason of Ft.
